The "Department of Engineering & IT" is looking for applicants for the following position:
Junior Researcher (m/f/d)
ADMiRE is the Research Center for Additive Manufacturing, Intelligent Robotics, and Embedded Sensors at Carinthia University of Applied Sciences. We focus on developing practical, sustainable, and application-driven solutions in 3D printing and robotics. Our work emphasizes real-world impact, promotes environmental responsibility, and thrives on close collaboration with industry partners and society. To further strengthen our activities in intelligent robotics, we are expanding our team with a dedicated researcher who will contribute to the development and application of humanoid robotic systems in research and industry-oriented projects. The Junior Researcher will be based at the CUAS Campus in Villach and will support ongoing research projects at ADMiRE, with a particular focus on humanoid robotics, full-body control, simulation-based skill development, and industrial task execution.
Responsibilities:
- Conduct applied research in humanoid robotics, with a focus on kinematics, dynamics, full-body control, balance, motion planning, and industrial task execution
- Support commissioning, calibration, and testing of humanoid robot platforms, including actuators, sensors, SDK interfaces, safety functions, and operational procedures
- Develop and maintain ROS 2-based software modules for robot state handling, motion commands, sensor interfaces, simulation, data logging, and task execution
- Implement and evaluate classical robot-control methods such as inverse kinematics, inverse dynamics, impedance/admittance control, feedback control, model predictive control, and torque-level control
- Support whole-body motion generation for humanoid manipulation tasks such as reaching, grasping, button pressing, pick-and-place, object handover, inspection, and simple machine-operation tasks
- Assist in translating research outcomes into teaching activities and course content
- Co-supervise bachelor’s theses related to ongoing research projects
- Support proposal preparation for public research funding and cooperation with industry partners
- Actively represent the research group in scientific networks and at conferences
We are looking for a motivated researcher to strengthen our interdisciplinary team at the ADMiRE Research Center. Our mission is to advance application-oriented research in additive manufacturing, robotics, and embedded sensor systems. The successful candidate will contribute to the development of innovative solutions that combine intelligent design, advanced materials, and integrated functionality to address real-world challenges in industry and society.
Your profile:
- Master’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Robotics, Mechatronics, Control Engineering, Computer Science, or a closely related technical field
- Solid understanding of robot kinematics, rigid-body dynamics, control theory, and numerical methods
- Knowledge of humanoid control topics such as posture control, balance, locomotion, gait planning, motion planning, whole-body control, and redundancy resolution
- Experience with ROS 2 and robotics simulation tools such as Gazebo, Isaac Sim, MoveIt, or MuJoCo
- Experience with humanoid robots, cobots, mobile manipulators, or legged robots
- Knowledge of real-time control, embedded systems, EtherCAT, CAN, PLC interfaces, or safety systems
- Programming experience in Python and/or C++
- Basic knowledge of AI for robotics, imitation learning, reinforcement learning, or computer vision
- Fluency in English (C1 level); German language skills (min. B2 level, w/s)
- Strong team spirit, intercultural competence, and high integrity in scientific work
